What is marketing and how can we define it?

Before we begin talking about what marketing IS let’s first expel a few
myths as to what marketing is NOT…

A common misconception about marketing is that it’s just a posh name
for selling.

word for selling.

In fact selling is the ultimate end goal of marketing and selling is the final stage in the marketing process whereby we exchange a product or service by some form of monetary value…

Marketing is constructed of much more intricate, finer details and it’s much more than just selling.

Marketing is the whole process, and selling is the final stage of marketing. So we can’t simply define marketing under the umberella of “selling”, it’s much more than that.

And also, by the same token, a common misconception is that marketing is just simply “advertising” and again, it’s more than just advertising.

Advertising is part of the process of marketing.  So when we market,
it’s basically a series of messages, and it’s a series of pre-researched,
and pre-structured messages.

So it’s important to understand, that marketing actually consists of a
series of finer details as a part of a big process with selling as the
ultimate aim, and promotion somewhere along the middle.

So now let’s talk about what marketing IS…

 

 

What are these finer details?

As I’m sure you’re aware, marketing is actually a very broad topic,
of which this blog and these video series that I produce for you is about.

But if we talk about it in broader, simple terms…

Simply, what are the key fundamental aspects of marketing?

We can actually put these into FOUR specific categories.

So what is marketing?

Before we talk about that, I would like to give you a quick
definition as to what marketing is…

So if you have a pen, write this definition down
and make notes…

So what is marketing?

Simply put…

“Marketing is the identification and anticipation of customer’s
needs and the profitable satisfaction of those needs”

So there are four key words in that definition…

We had marketing is the…

1. Identification

2. Satisfaction

3. Profitable

4. Anticipation

These are the four key components that define what marketing essentially is.
So let’s break it down a bit further…

Identification.

What do we mean by “identification?”

what is marketing strategySimply put, we are identifying customers needs.  What do they want?

We don’t need to make it more complex.  Identify what customers want.

How do we identify what customers want? By market research, identifying
what customers want.

What do customers want? What do customers need?

And remember, people are driven more by what they WANT than what they need.  So that’s a key thing to remember as well.

When we’re talking about customers needs, REALLY we’re talking about what people WANT.

So identify what people’s wants and desires are.   So once you identify what people’s wants and desires are and you fill the void for them, we come to the second part…

 

Satisfaction

In order for customers to be loyal to you and give you repeat custom, they need to feel satisfied that you are meeting their needs and wants.

you meet that need…

and then your next goal is to be sure that the customer FEELS that you have successfully filled that void for them.

 

So they must feel they are benefiting from your services or products that you are giving them.

So identify their needs and wants, and make sure they are satisfied with what you are giving them.

Profitable

Ofcourse, in any business or any venture that you’re doing,
profitability is your main goal.

But think about it like this…

While it’s in your best interest to be profitable and to make money, but from the customer’s point of view why do you need the transaction or marketing campaign to be profitable?

how to define marketingBecause, if your business is not profitable, how can you expect to sustain it and to continue delivering value to your customers? How can you continue to meet your customers needs and to fulfill their desires and wants if you are not profitable?

So ofcourse, from your perspective you want to be profitable to make money and to achieve the desired lifestyle that you want for yourself…

But also it’s not a wholly selfish motive to be profitable, because you want to be profitable so you can continue to enrich your customers lives, and to continue meeting their needs, wants and desires.

Ok so the first one we had “identification”, “satisfaction”, “profitable”, and the fourth component of marketing?

 


Anticipation

We need to continually study the market place…

We need to  anticipate and predict what our customers future needs, wants and desires are going to be based on the current trends and the current conditions of the market place, society or whatever field you are in.

Let’s refer back to our definition of marketing again…

Marketing is the identification and anticipation of customers needs,
and the profitable satisfaction of those needs“.

And just to round it off…

What ties all of these things together is one FIFTH key component…

 Promise

You must promise that you are going to deliver on all of the aforementioned and your customer in return is going to honor that promise by payment.

What is SEO? How does SEO work and how can I get my website to rank on the search engines?

If you are serious about marketing your business online effectively, SEO (Search Engine Optimization) should defnitely be a marketing stratefy that you should think about employing.

As I’m sure you can appreciate, Search Engine Optimization is a very in depth, broad subject.

There are whole books, seminars and courses that are purely focused on this tactic, so it’s not something that can be fully covered in just one blog post.

what is seoThere are so many tactics, methods and strategies when it comes to SEO that it can initially seem quite daunting, especially if you are new to Internet Marketing.

But listen, don’t let this overwhelm you.

In essence there are only three, key things that you need to do in order to get your page ranking on Google and the search engines.

And this can be broken down even further to essentially ONE basic thing that you need to do in order to get the search engines to recgonise you and rank your page above your competition.

Like I said, dont worry, stick with me and we’ll nail this together.  It really is easy stuff!

So, let’s get straight into things…

What is SEO and how does it work?

Ok SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is simply “the things you fo for the pages of your website so that are founf by Goog and to ensure they are shown in the top ten results when people search for something related to your business”

Whenever someone types in a particular key phrase into Google (or other search enfines) e.g. “mechanic in west London”, your goal is to ensure that your business web page ranks in the top ten search results (i.e. the first page) whenever someone perfoms that particular key phrase search.

Great!

So how does SEO work?

How do we get our web page to rank in the top ten search results when a particular key phrase is searched for?

how doe seo workAs we touched upon earlier, there a hundreds of theories and strategies (if not nore) as to how exactly to go about doing this, may of which are fantastic and ineed work extremely well.

On flip side, a lot of it is hogwash and if applied can actually serve to harm your marketing efforts and have to opposite effect.

So look…

First things first…

Let’s clear up a few misconceptions first…

Google is here to HELP us! Google is our friend!  They have provided u with an AMAZING platform for which to everge and promote our business to the world or indeed locally!

What’s more they are giving us the fantastic privalidge for FREE!

search engine optimizationThe main goal of Google (and indeed every other search engine) is to provide a continuously improving and increasingly effective service for it’s users (searchers and advertisers).

What Google want for their searchers is that they have a good experience and get the answers to their queeries whenever they conduct a search.

Simply put…

If you scratch their back, they’ll scratch yours.


If you help Google and the search engines achieve this, then they will reward you by giving your web page a greater weight on the search results.

There are various ways they measure whether you are doing this for them (which is another blog post altogether), e.g. the bounce rate of your site.

What’s important to understand is that Goole are contiuously fine tuning by what means a page qualifies to make it to the first page.

Hence why if you are always purely trying to manipulate Google without offering high quality content and valuable information in return, you’ll be forever playing catchup.

So this leads us to our third question…

How can I get my website to rank on the search engines?

Simply put…

There are three boxes that you will need to tick in order to maximize your chances of being giving the green light by Google.

The more competitive the keyphrase you are targeting, the greater extent to which you will need to ensure you are meeting the following criteria…

Note the following three points down…

1.  On page optimization.

Your site ought to load quickly, be easy to navigate, look good and be logixally laid out so that people can find your content in the easiest and simples way possible. 

on page seoEvery single page on your website should be related to your website’s overall theme (e.g. beauty related if you are selling beauty products).

Furthremore, you must ensure that every single page is optimized for just ONE keyphrase.

REMEMBER: While Google and the search engines place a certain emphasis as to the authority of a particular site, they ONLY rank web PAGES.

Each page (i.e. each post) has it’s own unique value to Google and the search engines).

2. Off page optimization

This is basically where you get your site linking back to as many high quality, AUTHORITY sites as possible. 

The more authority links you can get back to your website, from high authroity trusted websites (there are LOADS out there more about this on the blog post I created for you HERE), the greater the chane that Google and the search engines are going to view your content as something they can offer to their customers.

Authority websites are sites that Google feel are trustworthy in your niche/ content topic.

A strong word of warning here…

offpageseoThings are not as black and white as they used to be, and gone are the days of being able to purely manipukate the search engines by simply keyword stuffing your website and getting software that blasts thousands of backlinks to your website..

That game is long gone, and thankfully so!

If you intend to play this game, it will only last so long until Google finally cotton on, release a new update algorithym and before you know it your site gets completely wiped out, along with the income stream and business it was generating for you.

As I mentioned earlier, this can be broken down into one single aspect that essentially ties EVERYTHING together.

Which brings us onto the third point…

 

3. QUALITY and VALUE

Quality, Quality, Quality.  Value, Value, Value!

Above EVRYTHING else, this really is the most important aspect of your SEO game plan.

quality contentMake sure that the content you are producing is not only of extremely high quality and value, but make sure you are doing in consistently also.

It  might sound ciche, but this really is the single most important thing you can do to make sure your web pages rank reamin prominent on the search engines for the long run.

Ensure you are producing, high quality contenct on a consitent basis and you are scratching Googles back as well as giving tremendous value to the market place.
